The Society is delighted to announce that Dr Norman Fry and Professor Kalai Mathee are the new co-Editors-in-Chief for Journal of Medical Microbiology.

Norman K. Fry, BSc, PhD

Norman is currently a Clinical Scientist at Public Health England – National Infection Service, London, where he holds the following positions: Deputy Head of the Respiratory and Vaccine Preventable Bacteria Reference Unit; Head of the Vaccine Preventable Bacteria Section and Head of the World Health Organisation Collaborating Centre for Haemophilus influenzae and Streptococcus pneumoniae

In addition to these bacteria his areas of interest include Legionella, Bordetella and toxigenic corynebacteria; improved methods (including culture independent techniques) for their detection and characterisation; epidemiological typing, molecular epidemiology, genomics and phylogeny.

Norman completed his PhD on Legionella in 1992 and was then awarded a post-doctoral fellowship in the USA exploring microbial populations in the deep subsurface. Norman has co-authored more than 70 peer-reviewed articles. In 2007, he was appointed to the Editorial Board for the Journal of Medical Microbiology, as an Editor, and from 2015 Microbial Epidemiology Section Editor.

Kalai Mathee, MSc, PhD

Kalai is currently at the Hebert Wertheim College of Medicine, Florida International University in the following roles: Professor of Molecular Microbiology & Infectious Diseases and Associate and Founding Director of Global Health Consortium. Kalai’s research programme focuses on molecular pathogenesis of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, antimicrobial resistance, carbon metabolism, comparative genomics, microbiome, and drug discovery.

In 1992 Kalai completed her MSc at the University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia then her PhD on Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Tennessee, Memphis. This was followed by postdoctoral training in Tufts working with Helicobacter pylori, moving onto P. aeruginosa at UT-Memphis.

Kalai has co-authored over 90 articles, reviews and book chapters; including 60 peer-reviewed research articles. Kalai is also currently an Editor for Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology. In 2009 Kalai was appointed to the Journal of Medical Microbiology Editorial Board as an Editor, and in 2015 became the Prevention and Therapy Section Editor.
