abstract= SUMMARY A discontinuous density gradient procedure was used successfully to separate capsulate and non-capsulate cells of strains of Bacteroides fragilis. Bacteria from the capsulate fraction retained their capsules on subculture, but non-capsulate cells reverted to the mixed phenotype.,
